So what are the differences between hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric cars? Hybrid petrol and diesel cars will still be sold until 2035, by which point only zero-emissions vehicles, such as fully electric cars, will be available to buy new. With the ban on the sale of new non-hybrid petrol and diesel cars coming into effect from 2030, new-car buyers will have no choice but make the switch to some form of electrified transport. Years ago the UK government put together a long-term plan to promote the adoption of lower tailpipe-emitting vehicles, so hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles currently benefit from lower or – in the case of EVs until 2025 – zero road tax. Hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric cars all use some form of electrification to produce power, but do so in very different ways.
